Notes for Alpha testers
What’s new in 1.9.43
- Verse of the Day no longer repeats the chapter from the latest Between the Verses video.
- Plus is now at the top of More → Settings.
- Tech support email is now [email protected] (subject AtV Tech Support).
- About: small wording update to the Plus line.
What’s new in 1.9.42
- More has two tabs, Settings and About. Settings holds your reading (Bible in a Year, notes, highlights, saved content), preferences (reminder, appearance), and Backup (Export / Import). About holds the new story from Josh and Abby, Between the Verses, Plus, tech support, install steps, and Privacy / Terms. Back returns to the tab you were on.
- Plus screen: the main button, the price, and a Church license link now sit near the top, so you don’t have to scroll for them.
- Listen reads verse ranges as “through” (Philippians 4:12–13 is read “4:12 through 13”), not “minus”.
- Groups: tapping Add to next meeting scrolls the Post it button into view and pulses it gold. Pick a different date scrolls to the date and time fields.
- Verse of the Day notification while the app is open: tapping it now shows a small card with Go to today’s verse or Stay here. Before, it changed the screen underneath whatever you had open, so it looked like nothing happened. Opening the app from the notification still goes straight to the verse.
Also in 1.9.42 (from the 1.9.40 and 1.9.41 test builds)
- Save PDF fix: making a study sheet and tapping Save PDF no longer leaves a narrow copy of the sheet sitting over the app. The PDF is the sheet alone, ink on white at full page width.
- A compact Lead strip (study sheet, copy assignment, notes, post to your group) stays at the top of long passages in Lead.
- A meeting with several readings reads Reading 1, Reading 2, Reading 3 from top to bottom.
- Leader tools say “Assignment” instead of “Assign”. Home tagline: “Understand the verse. Grow your relationship with Jesus.”
- Search treats prostitute, harlot, and whore as one search and lists every match.
- About’s Privacy and Terms links point to aftertheverse.com.
What’s new in 1.9.39
- Several readings in one meeting. Adding a passage to the same meeting day and time makes it Reading 2 (then 3, up to 5) instead of replacing Reading 1. The form says so before you post, and the toast confirms it.
- Current lists every reading for the meeting (Reading 1, Reading 2…) with their own notes, questions, Open, and Listen. One study sheet covers the whole meeting.
- I read both (or I read all 3) marks itself only after you finish every reading. Leaders can remove a reading when there is more than one.
- Meetings that were posted twice on 1.9.38 with the same day and time fold into one meeting the next time the group loads.
- Scroll / auto-mark fix: group “marks itself when you reach the end” and Continue reading verse save work again after page scroll moved inside
.app.
What’s new in 1.9.38
- Post date prompt: when you post another passage, choose Add to next meeting (day and time shown) or Pick a different date — no quiet week roll.
- Current follows the meeting (next upcoming by meeting day from the start of today), not whichever passage was posted last. Upcoming vs Past readings.
- Light mode page margin: wider left/right gutter so More and lists are not flush to the edge.
What’s new in 1.9.37
- Select across several verses. Drag a selection over more than one verse and the Highlight · Copy · Clear bar stays up. Highlight marks every verse you touched (partial verses keep just the words you chose), Clear removes marks under the selection, and Copy takes the whole selection with its reference (for example “John 3:16–18 — …”). Works in the chapter reader, passage lookups, and Verse of the Day. In 1.9.36 the bar vanished and the phone’s Copy / Share menu took over.
- While you select verse text, the small menu by your finger shows the app’s own Highlight / Copy / Clear instead of the system Copy / Share / Select all. Notes, search, and other text boxes keep the normal phone menu.
- Listen: a chapter, Group range, or Bible in a Year day says the first verse number only, then just the words. A single verse still starts with its reference.
- Floating Pause · Play · Stop stays on screen while Listen is on, even after you leave the reader or Groups. Pause holds your place; Stop or the end of the reading hides the bar.
- When the verse being read is on your screen, that line is highlighted and scrolled into view.
- More → Tech support now opens mail to [email protected] (subject AtV Tech Support).
What’s new in 1.9.36
- 1.9.35 had two silent bugs. Groups study-card scripture in Read around it, Questions to bring, Elsewhere in Scripture, and Assign was plain text. In 1.9.36 those references are gold underlined buttons and open the reader at that range, including a span that crosses chapters.
- More → Settings Export / Import was on screen in 1.9.35 but not wired, and the app could not save or pick a backup file. 1.9.36 uses the phone’s save dialog and file picker, with a toast when the backup is saved or restored.
- Tech support, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Use taps are wired. They were not in 1.9.35.
- Dark-mode selection Copy stays dark ink on the cream bar (already in 1.9.35).
- Listen was already working. Highlighting and scrolling the verse being read arrived in 1.9.37.
What’s new in 1.9.35
- Native Listen uses Android TextToSpeech so phones without WebView speechSynthesis can still Listen (chapter, verse, Bible in a Year day, Group reads).
- Verse of the Day opens Bible text so Highlight and Copy work the same as on chapter and verse screens.
- First-open tips: Echoes labels + BSB public-domain note; notes, threads, and highlights live on this phone (uninstall clears them; a normal update keeps them).
- More → Settings showed Export / Import. Saving and picking a file did not work until 1.9.36.
- Unsave a thread and delete a note (Remove / Delete, or long-press).
- More: tech support email (subject AtV Tech Support; now [email protected] as of 1.9.37). About: Privacy Policy and Terms of Use links.
- Leader tools suggest related Echoes passages when building a guide. 100 in-depth studies (10 free + 90 Plus).
What’s new in 1.9.34
- Listen (device TTS), Turn off Bible in a Year, first-open highlight/notes tips, list sort, safe-area chapter open, keyboard scroll, toast polish, study sheet full screen, home tagline, About vision/Echoes copy, read-ahead tip, saved-threads rename.
Shared verse of the day (1.9.28)
- Everyone on the same Eastern Time date gets the same passage. An update does not restart the sequence or snap back to Romans 8:28.
- On a Between the Verses long day, that passage is the one launching. Sunday Oct 4, 2026 is 1 Samuel 17 (David and Goliath). John 4 (Sep 29) and Luke 15 (Oct 2) are on the same calendar. Psalm 23 is in the video map.
- Other days use a fixed supporting-passage list (the in-depth studies), picked from the date, not from when you installed.
- The map is
https://joshdalessio.com/btv-longs.json(votd.calendarandvotd.fallback). The app keeps a copy if the file is briefly unavailable. - When today’s passage has a long in that map, the Verse of the Day card shows Watch explanation.
- On a scheduled long day only, a local alarm notifies around 12:14 PM ET (not midnight, not Shorts days). Tap opens today’s passage, with Watch explanation when a video URL is in the map. This is not a push service.
Light-mode spacing (1.9.27)
- More room above the tab bar. Helper text (for example Appearance on More) no longer sits under Read / Lead / Groups / More.
- Light appearance uses looser list rows, section headings, and settings padding. Dark type and colors are unchanged.
New-day notification (1.9.26)
- Fixed: opening the app from the new-day notification no longer stays on yesterday’s screen. It opens today’s passage, or today’s plan reading when that reminder is on.
Plus is on by default (1.9.19)
- Fresh installs get Plus activated automatically (no Preview tap needed).
- You can still Return to Free via the lock control on the Plus screen; Preview unlocks again.
Watch explanation — Between the Verses longs (1.9.20+)
- On chapters with a published long (John 4, Psalm 23, Luke 15), a Watch explanation row opens the YouTube long.
- Remote map:
https://joshdalessio.com/btv-longs.json. In-app seed covers the same chapters if the URL is briefly unavailable.
Study questions (1.9.22)
- Study sheets no longer reuse two fixed discussion questions. In-depth passages have custom follow-ups; other passages get reference-based fallbacks.
Text highlights (1.9.22–23)
- Select words in a verse → Highlight · Copy · Clear bar. Marks can cover a phrase or the whole verse.
- More → Appearance switches Dark / Light; highlights stay readable in both.
Partial Copy ellipsis (1.9.24)
- When Copy takes only part of a verse, the clipboard text adds
…before and/or after so a paste is not mistaken for the full verse.
Leader Guide search (1.9.25)
- On What is the group in? (Lead → In-depth studies, or Home → Study notes): copy reads Pick or search for a passage the way you would for study night.
- An inline Search field sits under the title, above the situational list.
Open / queued
Current Alpha 1.9.43. Still lined up for later builds:
Later Studies cadence
- First wave of 100 studies shipped in 1.9.35. Standing rule: 100 new Plus studies unlock each January 1.
Later Verse of the day follow-up
- If you tap the daily notification but never open the passage, a gentle reminder before midnight once the app has sat unused for 6 hours. Easy to turn off.
Later Optional daily devotion
- A short devotion, usually a companion verse rather than the verse of the day. Easy to turn off, the same idea as Bible in a Year.
Later More screen split
- Full split of More into separate About and Settings screens (Settings / About / support / backup already enhanced in place in 1.9.35).
Shipped in 1.9.39 Multi-passage groups
- Several readings in one meeting (Reading 1, Reading 2…). Still later: a separate “I read it” per reading, reordering readings.
Later Reminder time and tablet layout
- A reminder time picker (the daily passage is still fixed at 7:30) and a two-pane Read layout for tablets.
Queued In-app update prompt
- A gentle prompt when a newer Alpha is on Play.
Live Cloudflare remote map
https://joshdalessio.com/btv-longs.jsonis live (john.4, psalm.23, luke.15, 1samuel.17) as of this Oct 4, 2026 deploy. Worth a quick check after future Pages deploys.
Open iOS / TestFlight
- Apple Developer is active. External TestFlight is in progress / Waiting for Review — no firm date yet.
- Current testing is Google Play closed Alpha (Android).
Fixed recently
Fixed in 1.9.39 Second reading replaced the first
Posting another passage for the same meeting day and time now adds Reading 2 instead of replacing Reading 1. Same-day sessions from 1.9.38 fold together on load. Group auto-mark and Continue reading on scroll work again.
Done in 1.9.38 Post date prompt, Current-by-meetsAt, light margin
Choose Add to next meeting or Pick a different date before you post. Current follows the next meeting day. Light mode has wider side margins.
Fixed in 1.9.37 Multi-verse selection lost the Highlight bar
Selecting across more than one verse hid the app’s Highlight / Copy / Clear bar and showed the phone’s menu instead. 1.9.37 keeps the bar, highlights every verse in the selection, and copies the full text with its reference.
Done in 1.9.37 Listen verse highlight, scroll, and floating controls
The verse being read is highlighted and scrolled into view when it is on screen. Pause / Play / Stop float across screens while Listen is on. Multi-verse Listen says only the first verse number.
Fixed in 1.9.36 Groups text links and backup
1.9.35 left Groups scripture in Read around it, questions, elsewhere, and assign as plain text, and left Export / Import unwired so the phone could not save or pick a backup file. Both are fixed in 1.9.36. Tech support, Privacy, and Terms taps are wired in the same build.
Fixed in 1.9.35 Highlight bar Copy contrast (dark)
Selection bar Copy uses dark ink on the cream bar so it matches Highlight for readability.
Fixed in 1.9.34 Chapter open from note tucked under status bar
Opening a chapter from a note or highlight now offsets by the safe area and header so the verse has comfortable top padding.
Fixed in 1.9.28 Verse of the day restarted on every update
The passage is chosen from the Eastern Time date and the hosted calendar, not a counter stored on the phone. Launch days follow the long. Other days use the supporting-passage list.
Fixed in 1.9.27 Light-mode spacing and tab bar overlap
Content scrolls above the tab bar, so helper text is not clipped under the icons. Light-mode rows and settings have more padding. Dark type and colors are unchanged.
Fixed in 1.9.26 New-day notification opened the last screen
The notification opens today’s passage (or today’s plan reading) instead of the screen left open yesterday.
Fixed in 1.9.18 Status bar overlaps Home header
Clock and status icons no longer draw over “AFTER THE VERSE” / Search. Safe-area padding applies on Home and other screens with top chrome.
Fixed in 1.9.18 Narrow layout on tablets
Content uses more horizontal space on large screens (first pass). Two-pane Read is still later.
Fixed in 1.9.17 Back swipe exited the app
On 1.9.16, swipe-back could leave the app instead of going back inside it. Fixed in 1.9.17.
Fixed in 1.9.17 Between the Verses hard to find
The YouTube link is now the first row in More.
This list will grow as testers report issues. Glory to God — thanks for helping strengthen the app.
